Post Graduate Program
The Hun School’s Postgraduate Program is designed for students who have completed high school graduation requirements, affording them academic opportunities at the Advanced Placement (AP) level in the disciplines of their greatest interest.
A specially designed Postgraduate English course emphasizes critical and analytical writing in preparation for college courses. The College Counseling Office conducts regular individual meetings with Postgraduate students that center on the selection of institutions that meet their academic and extracurricular interests. The residential program allows students the opportunity to test their independence in a structured, supportive environment. Living and learning with others enhances personal growth and sets a firm foundation for college.
The Hun School Postgraduate Program is supported by the United States Naval Academy Foundation, which recommends a few students to each year who are preparing to enter the U.S. Naval Academy. We are proud of this endorsement and welcome these highly qualified men and women from the United States and abroad.
English
The English Department offers a Postgraduate English class specifically targeted to prepare students for the demands of a college curriculum. During the Postgraduate course, students are required to read challenging literature and express themselves fluently in both class discussions and in their writing about the material. Postgraduate students learn literary research techniques and study a variety of literary criticism methods and genres, culminating in the preparation and presentation of sophisticated literary reviews and research projects. Among the poets and writers studied during the year are: Homer, Sophocles, Milton, Shakespeare, Coleridge, Pope, Hawthorne, Melville, Frost, Yeats, Joyce, and O’Neill. In the early stages of the course of study, students are provided the opportunity to improve their SAT verbal skills through class preparation.
Science
Advanced Placement courses are available in Biology, Chemistry, and Physics. These courses are designed to prepare students for the Advanced Placement exams and give them the opportunity to earn college credit. Postgraduates may also take the regular or honors science courses available to all Hun School students. Additionally, elective courses are offered in marine science, and human anatomy and physiology.
Mathematics
The Mathematics Department offers a wide range of courses to meet students’ interests and abilities. Advanced Placement courses include AP Calculus AB, AP Calculus BC, and AP Statistics. Course selections are available in Algebra, Geometry, Pre-Calculus, Trigonometry, Calculus, and Multivariable Calculus.
Computer Science
The curriculum of the Computer Science Department emphasizes computer programming, computer graphics, digital video production, interactive media, business applications, e-mail, and the usage and development of websites. An AP Computer Programming course is offered, as well beginning and intermediate programming and application courses.
History
The History Department offers AP courses in American history, European history, and art history. Outstanding courses are also offered in American government, American art history, American social history, economics, modes of knowing, and war and peace in Europe.
Foreign Language
Advanced Placement and honors courses are offered in Spanish, French, and Latin. The curriculum is designed to develop students’ communication skills in the language being studied and to acquaint them with the cultural contributions of other societies.
Fine Arts
Fine Arts courses at The Hun School provide access to both practical and hands-on experience as well as an opportunity to learn through reading, observing, and writing. The Fine Arts Department offers courses in woodworking, architectural drawing, ceramics, sculpture, painting, drawing, photography, computer and presentation arts, video production, drama, scene study, music, chorus, and jazz band.
College Counseling
The College Counseling Office conducts regular individual meetings with Postgraduate students that center around the selection of institutions that meet their academic and extracurricular interests. All students are encouraged to visit colleges, attend college fairs, and meet with the over 200 representatives of the institutions that visit The Hun School annually. Each fall, the School sponsors a special evening event for parents to explain the college selection process. In the past, the program has featured college admissions directors, Educational Testing Services representatives, and financial aid experts.
Testing
A voting member of the College Board, The Hun School is a test center for all College Board examinations and related tests, including the SAT, SAT II, TOEFL, and Advanced Placement tests.
Residential Life
The Residential Program at The Hun School offers students the opportunity to test their independence in a structured, supportive environment. During the two-hour evening study hall members of the faculty are available to assist and advise students. The Hun School provides a home-like setting at school. Living and learning with others enhances personal growth and sets a firm foundation for college. On weekends, students take advantage of the many academic, cultural, and athletic activities provided by one of the finest university communities in the world.
Athletics
The Hun School's athletic program has long been noted for its outstanding teams and excellent coaching. Students may participate in three seasons of interscholastic sports, which provide experience and preparation for college-level competition. In addition, athletes have the opportunity to take advantage of the new Athletic Center, expected spring of 2008. Coaches are members of the teaching faculty and work closely with students to help them develop the organization and responsibility that will allow them to balance a rigorous schedule of academic work and athletics during the college years.
